ISOI Distinguished Speaker: Julie Battilana

You are invited to the ISOI Distinguished Speaker Series seminar co-sponsored by INQUIRE seminar with Julie Battilana on Friday, April 26. The seminar will take place on Zoom from 12:00-1:20 pm. This will be followed by an informal conversation from 3:30-4:20 pm on Zoom. Julie Battilana will be presenting on "Purpose and Power in Organizations: Learning from Alternative Forms of Organizing to Address Societal Grand Challenges."

Abstract: Corporations are increasingly expected to pursue social and environmental purpose in addition to profit, but we still do not know much about which forms of organizing may be best suited to enable them to rise to this challenge. This talk will first explore what we have learned about how organizations can sustain the pursuit of social and environmental objectives alongside financial ones. We will then examine which distributions of decision-making power are better suited (if any) to sustaining the pursuit of these multiple objectives. To investigate this question, we introduce a framework of four ideal type forms of organizing that vary along two key dimensions: purpose and power. This will help highlight a set of research questions that need to be addressed if we are to understand how corporations can transition to more sustainable models of organizing.
